Queen of Alfred the Great
âEalshswitha of the Gainiâ was a descendant of the Mercian kings and she married Alfred when he was only eighteen, four years before he became king. We do not know how old Elswitha was, but she outlived Alfred by three years, thus experiencing the whole of his turbulent and exciting reign.
The problem of the Danish invasions must have preoccupied them both, but as Alfred became more and more successful the pair of them enjoyed a relatively settled life in Winchester, which Alfred made his capital. She brought up two sons and three daughters; her elder son, Edward, succeeded to the throne. The descendants of Elswitha and Alfred were to rule England right up to the time of the Norman Conquest.
